Yemi Alade – Away ft. Teni

“Away” is one of those simple words that can mean several things depending on the situation. It can describe leaving a relationship, creating space from someone, travelling somewhere, or simply deciding that you need time alone. That makes the title easy to connect with because almost everyone has experienced a moment when being around somebody no longer feels right.

The addition of Teni gives the track a clear collaborative identity on paper, bringing two recognisable Nigerian voices together around a title that leaves plenty of room for interpretation. There is also something interesting about the way the word can sound either like a firm decision or a quiet request. Sometimes you say you are going away because you have already made up your mind. Other times, you are hoping the person in front of you will finally understand why you need distance.

Away can therefore speak to different kinds of personal situations without needing a complicated phrase to explain itself. It could fit the person walking away from an unhealthy connection, someone choosing independence after being taken for granted, or simply anybody who has reached the point where space feels necessary. The title carries that familiar push and pull between staying because of what once mattered and leaving because something has changed. With Yemi Alade and Teni attached to the record, the collaboration also gives the release a strong sense of personality before a listener even gets into the details.
