TWO OCEAN – Ngikuthanda Kakhulu

Promise

It does not get more direct than Ngikuthanda Kakhulu, the title chose for this record, which simply means I love you very much.

There is a reason people keep coming back to songs built around that sentence. It is the thing we find hardest to say in real life, even when we feel it strongly. In many Nigerian homes, love is shown through food, school fees, a phone call on Sunday, rather than words. So when somebody actually says it outright, with the extra emphasis of very much, it carries a lot.

The word kakhulu is where the feeling grows. Without it, the sentence would be a plain statement. With it, the speaker is saying that ordinary love is not enough to describe what they mean. It is the same push people feel when they say I really, really love you and still think they have not said it properly.

The song is one of the tracks on the Kuyoba Umlando album, and it brings a softer human side to a project that also deals with prayer, endurance and everyday struggle.

A record with this idea suits many moments, from a wedding to a quiet apology between two people who have not spoken for days. Sometimes the simplest sentence in any language is the one that finally lands.
