The Silent Partner – Mirror Mirror ft. IVEY.H
The old childhood question gets a more serious meaning in Mirror Mirror by The Silent Partner, turning the familiar image of a mirror towards self examination.
A mirror shows what is in front of it, but people rarely look at themselves without bringing their own thoughts and insecurities into the experience. Someone may notice their appearance first, while another person may see tiredness, age, confidence or a change they have been trying to ignore. The title therefore opens up a useful question about identity. What do we see when we stop looking at other people and pay attention to ourselves?
On therapist, Mirror Mirror fits a project concerned with the thoughts people carry privately. The mirror can represent honesty, because it does not allow you to look away from what is directly in front of you. That does not mean every reflection has to be negative. Self examination can also help a person recognise growth. Sometimes you look back at an older version of yourself and realise that you have survived things that once seemed impossible.
There is also a social side to the idea. People spend plenty of time comparing themselves with others, especially in a world where appearances are constantly displayed. It is easy to see somebody else’s success and feel behind, without knowing the problems that person is carrying. A mirror can remind us to return to our own story. Your life cannot be measured properly by somebody else’s reflection.
The record leaves room for both confidence and vulnerability. Looking honestly at yourself can be uncomfortable, but it can also be freeing. There is no need to pretend everything is perfect before you can appreciate who you are. Sometimes growth begins with accepting what you see, understanding what needs to change and giving yourself credit for how far you have already come.
