Marnz Malone – Free Speech

Mathew Cooker

There is a certain confidence in being able to speak your mind, and leans into that idea with Free Speech, a track from I Wish I Could Sing that puts honesty at the centre.

Free speech sounds simple until you consider what happens when the opinion is unpopular. People are comfortable with honesty when it agrees with them. The situation changes when somebody says something uncomfortable, questions the usual way of doing things or refuses to keep quiet. That tension gives the title more weight than it might have at first glance.

For Marnz Malone, that idea fits naturally with a style of writing that has often been reflective and personal. His music has dealt with real experiences and difficult subjects, and a title like this leaves plenty of room for direct observations. There is no need to make every thought neat or easy for everyone to accept.

One thing that makes this record interesting within I Wish I Could Sing is its position early in the project. After the opening track, this one gives the album another way to introduce its personality. It suggests a rapper comfortable with saying what is on his mind, even when the subject may not be the easiest conversation.

Free Speech also connects with everyday life in a very ordinary way. At work, in friendships, online or within family conversations, people often have thoughts they keep to themselves because they know what might happen if they say them. Speaking honestly takes confidence, but it also comes with responsibility.

The track therefore fits listeners who appreciate rap that leaves room for personal opinion and observation. Sometimes the strongest thing a person can say is simply what they genuinely think. The difficult part is being prepared for the reaction that may follow.
