Maqhinga Hadebe – Imali Yokuza Ft. Maqhinga Stanley Radebe

Translated loosely, the title speaks of money that is coming. That small word “yokuza” carries hope and patience together. It is not money in hand. It is money you are still waiting for, and anybody who has chased a payment knows how long that wait can feel.

This is a subject Nigerians understand very well. We know the friend who says the contract is about to land. We know the cousin who promises to pay back next week. We know the person who keeps saying that good days are close while the rent is due now. Optimism in the face of empty pockets is a whole culture, and it can be funny and painful at the same time.

A song with this title can go in a few directions. It could be a prayer, a boast or a quiet complaint, and the artist is the only person who can say which. What I can say is that the subject has real roots in daily life, which gives the record something solid to stand on.

If you are in a season of waiting, the idea in Imali Yokuza will probably sound familiar. It is a song for the hustle before the breakthrough.
