IGqumelasha – The Summer Ft. Ukhoz’olumpunga

Here in Nigeria we do not really have summer in the way people abroad describe it. We have harmattan, rainy months and the heat before the rain. Still, the word has travelled through music, films and holiday posts, and it now stands for freedom, long evenings and the sense that anything could happen.

That makes the choice of title quite telling. It tells you the song is probably about a mood or a season of life, and not about a single event. The best songs on this subject usually capture a period when you were younger, lighter or just happier than you are now, and everyone has one of those. The Summer is simply a name for it.

Having ukhoz’olumpunga on the record adds another voice to that memory, and that fits, since good seasons are rarely remembered alone. They are remembered with people.

For a Nigerian listener, the song can easily belong to December, to a beach trip or to an evening on a balcony with friends. The exact setting is up to you.
