Five Tribes – Shadows In Between

Mathew Cooker

gives Shadows In Between a title that points towards uncertainty, hidden feelings and the spaces that exist between what people say and what they actually carry.

There is something naturally mysterious about a shadow. It is visible, but it does not tell the whole story of the object creating it. That makes the word useful when talking about memories, relationships and situations where not everything is clearly understood. The “in between” part adds another layer because it suggests a space that is neither one thing nor another. Many difficult moments in life happen exactly there.

On the What Remains album, the title can connect with the parts of an experience that are difficult to explain. A friendship may no longer feel the same without having officially ended. Two people can care about each other while carrying unresolved issues. Someone can be happy about moving forward and still miss what they left behind. Those mixed emotions do not always fit neatly into one description.

The phrase “in between” is the detail that gives this title its personality. It suggests that the subject is not simply about darkness. There is a space between memory and the present, closeness and distance, acceptance and resistance. People often spend more time in those uncertain spaces than they admit. Sometimes the clearest understanding only comes after enough time has passed for the different pieces to settle.
