Portable – Joki na Joke
Trust Portable to turn a throwaway line into a title, and Joki Na Joke sounds like the sort of phrase you hear in a danfo or at the joint.
The wording is pure street Pidgin. Everybody knows someone who says something harsh, then waves it off with “I was only joking”. The title seems to play with that habit, where a joke is just a joke and nobody should take it too far. In Nigerian life the line between banter and insult is thin, and one careless remark can turn a laugh into a quarrel. A phrase like Joki Na Joke sits right on that line.
That is what makes it interesting. It can be read as a warning to a friend who jokes too hard, or as a defence from the one who got caught saying too much. It can even be a way of hiding something serious behind humour, which many of us do when the truth is too awkward to say plainly.
Portable, who comes from Ogun State, has built his name on loud street energy and a talk-straight-from-the-gutter style. A title like this fits that image, because it feels spoken, not written. It sounds like a line he could say to a crowd and get an instant reaction.
For anyone who has ever laughed something off after saying it, the subject will feel familiar. It makes sense at the beer parlour, in a group of friends who tease each other without mercy, or whenever someone needs a reminder that not everything is meant to be taken to heart.
