RUNDA – Afunimawobe
Some titles ask you to trust the sound before the meaning, and Afunimawobe from RUNDA is one of them.
The word looks like it comes from a Ghanaian language, and I would not stake a firm claim on its meaning, so I would sooner leave that to the people who speak it. What I can say is that it has a long, rolling shape, with a bright ending that is fun to say out loud. Nigerians know how this works. We have sung along to Lingala, Twi and Zulu lines for years without a dictionary, because the feeling reached us first.
That is part of the appeal of an album like Okafor’s Law, where an Igbo surname sits beside titles from other places. Afunimawobe suggests a project happy to cross borders, and a title this singable gives a crowd something to attempt on the first listen. I will not guess how the record is built.
It suits a long drive with friends from different countries, when someone teaches the car a new word and everybody tries to get it right.
