Deejay Solid – Undertaking Ft. Highstarlavista

In Nigerian English the word has two lives. The first is a task or a project, as in a big thing a person has agreed to carry out, such as building a house, running a campaign or organising a wedding for two hundred guests. The second is a promise, the sort you sign or swear to, where somebody says they will deliver and everyone is watching to see if they do. Both meanings point to responsibility, and responsibility is something every adult in this country understands.

There is also a darker reading that makes the title interesting. In some places the same word belongs to the funeral business, and Nigerians will smile uneasily at that. It shows how one word can sit between ambition and mourning depending on who says it. Deejay Solid is a DJ name, so the title may well speak to the job of keeping a night moving, and Highstarlavista is the credited guest. I will not describe the beat, the vocals or the production here, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge.

It suits the person who has taken on a heavy assignment and is quietly determined to see it through.
