Black Motion – iButho (Ancestral Mix) Ft. Spice Drums, Thabo Roy Mabogwane and Mpho Thobejane

Ibutho is a Zulu word for a regiment, a group of warriors or an organised body of people. It brings to mind unity, discipline and loyalty to something bigger than yourself. The bracket adds the word ancestral, which pulls the title toward lineage and the people who came before. Together, the two words feel like a gathering of generations standing in one line.

That is a lot of meaning for a dance record to carry, and it is what makes the name interesting. African music often lives at the meeting point of the party and the sacred. People dance and remember in the same moment. A title that speaks of an ancestral regiment fits that tradition well, because it treats the floor as a place of memory as well as movement.

The record is on Pula le Maatla, and the credit is short, with Spice Drums, Thabo Roy Mabogwane and Mpho Thobejane joining the South African duo. A smaller circle can make a record feel tight and purposeful, as though everyone present knew exactly what the job was.

It is a record for the night you want the music to feel older than you are.
