Umxoshi – Uvumeleni
Forgiveness and permission are close cousins, and Uvumeleni by Umxoshi sits right between them.
The word is Zulu, and it points to allowing, permitting or giving consent. It can mean letting someone go, letting something happen or giving a person the room to be who they are. That is a surprisingly deep idea for a single word. Real life is full of moments when the hardest thing is to simply allow, whether it is a child leaving home, a partner making a choice you dislike or yourself moving on.
I like titles like this because they leave the situation open. You can imagine a plea, a surrender or a quiet act of kindness. Any Nigerian who has had to let an elder make a decision they disagreed with, or let a friendship fade without a fight, knows how much weight that kind of permission carries.
The record is on Trust Me, the album that shares its name with another track from the project. Uvumeleni feels like a natural fit there, because trust and permission are tied together. You cannot really trust someone until you are willing to let them be free.
It is a thought for a calm moment of acceptance, when you stop fighting something and let life take its course.
