Halle – Way Out

The phrase can point in two directions. It can mean an escape from something painful, like a relationship that has stopped working, a town that feels too small or a life that no longer fits. It can also mean a solution, the answer you have been searching for. Either way, it sounds like the end of a long search.

That makes it a sensible title for a final track. After a whole album of questions about love, doubt and desire, looking for a way out feels like a natural next step. It suggests movement and decision, and a listener finishing the project is left thinking about what to do with everything they have just heard.

I like that the title does not tell you whether the exit is sad or hopeful. In Nigeria, people say they are looking for a way out all the time, whether from a job, a country or a bad situation, and it often carries both relief and fear.

It is the kind of thought that stays with you after the last song ends, when the room is quiet and you start planning what comes next.
