Halle – Overtime
Anybody who has stayed back at work past closing time will smile at overtime from Halle, even before they know what the song is about.
The word carries two moods in Nigeria. For a worker, it means extra hours, tired eyes and the hope of a bit more pay at the end of the month. For a couple, it can mean the time you keep giving to someone because you are not ready to stop. A title that sits between work and romance is more interesting than it first looks.
Think about the person who keeps calling after midnight, or the friend who keeps staying later at the party because someone special is still there. That is overtime of a different kind, paid in feeling instead of money. The title lets you place yourself anywhere between those two readings.
The record is on love?… or something like it (Deluxe), an album name that already questions what love really is. Having a song called overtime inside it feels natural, because effort and time are the usual price of any relationship, whether it is going well or not.
It is a record for the hour when the street is quiet, the day should have ended long ago and you are still choosing to give someone a bit more of yourself.
