Cojo Rae – Gen Z Highlife

Promise

Some titles are a mission statement, and puts his on the table with Gen Z Highlife, a single that shares its name with the album.

Highlife is one of the oldest popular sounds in West Africa, born in Ghana and Nigeria and carried by bands, guitars and dance floors for generations. Many Nigerians grew up hearing it at weddings and funerals, played by uncles who knew every line. Attaching the label Gen Z to it says something clear: a younger generation wants a seat at that table.

That is what makes the idea interesting. Young listeners today move between amapiano, afrobeats and drill, and a title like this suggests an artist pulling the older sound into their world instead of leaving it behind. I will not pretend to describe the production or lyrics, since I cannot confirm them, but the name alone points to a mix of old roots and fresh energy.

There is also a small confidence in naming the whole project after a genre, as if the artist is claiming a lane. By the time a friend asks if you have played Gen Z Highlife, someone will already be arguing about whether the young generation can really carry it.

Anyone who loves the old sound, or wants to hear it reimagined, will see themselves in the idea. It suits weekend gatherings, long drives and family parties where the old and the young share one speaker.
