L.A.X – IYAWO Ft. DOTTi The Deity
Few words stir a Nigerian wedding hall like the one L.A.X chooses for IYAWO, featuring DOTTi The Deity.
In Yoruba, iyawo means wife or bride, and the word carries more feeling than its simple translation suggests. It is what people shout when a new bride walks in, what elders say when blessing a young couple, and what a man says with pride when he introduces the woman he has chosen. Even people who do not speak the language know the mood it brings.
That is why it makes such a strong title. A wedding in Naija is never quiet. There is food, aso ebi, dancing and uncles spraying money, and the bride is always the centre of attention. Calling a song by that name puts the listener straight into that setting, with relatives clapping and friends teasing the groom. It can also point to a quieter picture, a man talking about the woman he hopes to marry.
The title leaves room for different moods. It might be a celebration, a praise song, a love letter or a playful boast about finding the right partner. I will not pretend to describe production details or lyrics I cannot confirm, but a word this rooted in tradition suggests warmth and joy. Having DOTTi The Deity on the record adds a second voice, which suits a subject that always involves two people.
What I like is how familiar the idea feels. Almost everybody has danced at a wedding where the whole room sang along to a bride’s praise. By the time a friend asks if you have heard IYAWO, you may already be thinking of the last wedding you attended and the song that made everybody stand up.
Anyone planning a wedding, celebrating a marriage or dreaming of one will see themselves in the idea. It suits owambe weekends, engagement parties and evenings when love is the only topic at the table.
