Danny S – Gbemilo

Promise

Some prayers are only two words long, and picks one for Gbemilo, from the Anthem album.

In Yoruba, the phrase is a plea to carry me, lift me or take me along. It is the kind of request a tired person makes when strength has run out and they need somebody stronger to bear the weight. In worship, it is usually directed upward, asking God to carry the speaker through a season they cannot manage alone.

That is why it connects so easily. Most of us have had a year when everything felt heavy, with bills, sickness, disappointments and waiting that refused to end. In Nigerian churches, prayers like this are often sung slowly and repeated, because repetition lets the heart catch up with the words. Nobody is ashamed to ask for help in that setting.

I will not pretend to describe production details or lyrics I cannot confirm, but a title built on a simple request suggests a record that is honest and humble, made for people who need comfort. On an album called Anthem, it also hints at a song a whole congregation could take up together.

There is something freeing about admitting you cannot do everything yourself. Strength is often shown in asking, and a short line can say that better than a long speech. When a friend sends you Gbemilo on a hard day, the message behind it is clear without any explanation.

Anyone who is tired, stretched or simply waiting for a breakthrough will see themselves in the idea. It suits midnight prayers, quiet mornings and the calm after a difficult week.
