Okmalumkoolkat – eThekwini Intro

Promise

Every good album needs a front door, and opens iTheku eThekwini through one with eThekwini Intro.

eThekwini is the Zulu name for Durban, the coastal city many South Africans call home or holiday in. Using the local name instead of the English one says a lot. It tells you the project is rooted in a place, spoken from the inside, and not packaged for outsiders who only know the beachfront.

Intros do a particular job on a project. They set the mood, introduce the setting and tell the listener what kind of conversation is about to begin. Nigerians will relate, because we also open our own projects with a short welcome to Lagos, Port Harcourt or Kano, a way of planting a flag before the main business starts.

I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but an opening track named after a city, on an album that carries the city’s name twice in its title, suggests a record built around identity. It feels like a host standing at the gate, ready to show you round his side of town.

There is a small pleasure in that. Every city has a version of itself that only locals know, and an intro is where that version gets announced. By the time a friend asks what eThekwini Intro sets up, you may already be describing the whole neighbourhood.

Anyone who is proud of where they come from will recognise the mood. It suits the first play of an album, a road trip toward the coast and the moment you arrive somewhere that feels like home.
