Vikiconsi – Waqome EP
Rising after a slow season is one of the best stories a person can tell, and Vikiconsi builds a four-track EP around that feeling with Waqome.
The word is addressed to someone and carries the sense of a person who has stood up or woken from a long pause. It sounds like what a friend says when you finally make your move after months of waiting. In Nigeria we call that kind of recovery a testimony, and nobody keeps quiet about it. The student who passed after repeating, the trader whose shop finally picked up, the friend who left a bad situation and started smiling again, all of them have lived this word.
What I find interesting is how the track list moves around that idea. It opens with a quiet compliment in Muhle, then turns to restless motion in Jikamajika, and later to a call for people to come together in Awubuthele. So the EP starts with admiration, passes through movement and ends with community. That order feels natural, because recovery rarely happens alone. Somebody praises you, life starts moving again, and soon the whole street is gathered around you.
The guest list adds more voices to the project. Mxo Jeqe, Nanow Mngadi and Alicia Gudazi appear across the EP, so the story is shared instead of carried by one person. I will not describe production details I cannot confirm, but a short release with several guests feels like friends taking turns to cheer the same person on, the way people do at a wedding when somebody finally gets good news.
There is a small contrast worth noticing too. Naming a project after the moment someone gets up puts the focus on what comes next, not on the fall. By the time a friend says Waqome to you after a hard year, you will know it is a compliment.
Anyone who has come out of a difficult season, or is still waiting for their own turn, will see themselves in this EP. It suits early mornings, new beginnings and any day that feels like a fresh start.
