Babyfxce E – Wilt Ft. BabyDrill

Promise

Few one-word titles hold as much quiet drama as Wilt, a Detroit rap record from with alongside him.

The word comes from the world of plants. A flower that has not been watered droops, loses its colour and slowly gives up. When people use it for human beings, they usually mean someone who has lost their strength, their confidence or their spark. It can also work as a challenge, almost like a warning to someone else about what happens when pressure gets too much. Because the title is so short, the meaning is left for the listener to fill in.

Everyday life gives us plenty of examples. A worker who has been overlooked for years begins to lose their enthusiasm. A friend who carries everyone’s problems starts to look tired. Back home we say “he has dried up” when someone’s energy or fortune runs low, and the picture is not far from what this word suggests. What I find interesting is that rap rarely uses soft, natural imagery like this, so a title taken from a garden stands out among all the usual street vocabulary.

Having BabyDrill on the record adds another voice to that mood. Two rappers sharing a song with a title like this could mean two sides of the same struggle, or one person speaking to the other, though only the verses can settle that.

It is a record for those heavy seasons when you feel drained, and for anyone who knows that standing strong is something you have to keep choosing.
