Babyfxce E – Fake Don

Promise

Calling someone out in two words is a skill, and Fake Don from Detroit rapper does exactly that before a single verse starts.

A “don” is a boss, the big man in the room who everybody is meant to respect. Put “fake” in front and the whole picture changes. It points at the person who dresses the part, talks loud and tells people what he owns, while the reality behind it does not match. We have these characters everywhere. In Nigeria we would say he is “doing too much”, the one who rents a car for the photo and posts it as if he bought it.

What I like about the title is that it works as an accusation and a warning at the same time. It tells the target he has been seen, and it tells everybody else to be careful about who they take seriously. That kind of calling out is a long tradition in rap, where claiming real status is the easiest way to get checked by someone who knows better.

It also fits the Detroit street rap world Babyfxce E belongs to, where authenticity counts for a lot and pretending can cost you your reputation fast. Whether the verses name a particular person or speak in general terms is something only a proper listen can answer.

Anyone who has watched a friend or a stranger build a whole image on nothing will relate. It is a record for those moments when you see through the show and decide to say it out loud.
