NMIXX – 너는 달 (Sing to the Moon) (LILY, HAEWON)
A title that reads like a love note to the sky always stands out, and 너는 달 (Sing to the Moon) does exactly that. The track is credited to Lily and Haewon of NMIXX, and it lives on the Strange Muse album.
The Korean part means “you are the moon”, which changes how the English subtitle reads. Singing to the moon is something a person does alone. Calling somebody the moon is about the person you are thinking of. So the title seems to hold two ideas together, a lonely voice and the one who is being sung about.
People have always talked to the moon in one way or another. In many Nigerian homes, children are told stories under it during power cuts, and anyone far from home knows that the same moon is hanging over the people they miss. It becomes a shared point between two places, which is a lovely image for longing.
Because this one is credited to two members, it reads as a duet-style pairing, and I would rather not guess how the two voices move around each other. The setting the title paints is already clear enough, with night, distance and a quiet wish to be heard by someone far away.
It is the sort of subject that suits the hours after midnight, with the phone dim and the room still. If you have ever missed someone so much that looking up felt easier than talking, this one is for you.
