Kota Embassy – Yasho Ft. Nimrod Pitso & Nkateko Tshabalala

The name is brief, punchy and a little mysterious. It does not obviously map onto a well-known phrase, so listeners are left to guess whether it is a person, a place, a nickname or a made-up word. That sense of puzzle can be a strength, because people love explaining a mystery to their friends.

Only two guests are credited here, and both of them, Nimrod Pitso and Nkateko Tshabalala, show up across the album repeatedly. Seeing the same pair appear again and again suggests a settled working relationship, with people who understand each other and do not need long meetings to find the idea.

There is a charm in a title that refuses to over-explain itself. In a time when many songs have long names packed with features and brackets, Yasho stands out simply by being tidy. The eye lands on it quickly on a tracklist, and it is easy to remember when you are telling a friend which song to look for.

It is the kind of record people will argue about the meaning of at a hangout, and nobody will mind, because the guessing is half the fun.
