King Wazza – Sghubu Benny Ft. Kwanda MusiQ, Theodesoul & BenyRic

Sghubu is South African street slang for a smart, well dressed, confident man, someone who carries himself with style. Pair it with a first name and you get a character, almost like a local legend. Nigerians have plenty of similar figures, the guy who always has the sharpest outfit and a story for every situation.

I find the use of a personal name in the title very interesting. It turns the record into a portrait, and portraits are harder to write than general love songs because they need to feel like real people. The inclusion of BenyRic among the guests adds a small wink, since the name sits so close to the character in the title.

Kwanda MusiQ and Theodesoul round out the team, and together the trio gives the song a friendly, neighbourhood feeling. Sghubu Benny reads like a record that celebrates people who make an entrance, the ones who walk into a function and the mood shifts slightly.
