Mbekezeli 1010 – Impumelelo Ft. Menzi

In Zulu, the word simply means success, and anybody who has hustled in Lagos, Abuja or Johannesburg knows how differently people define it. For one person it is a car in the compound. For another it is a salary that enters on the right date. For somebody else it is just peace at home and food on the table without drama. That spread of meaning is what makes a song with this name interesting before you even press play.

Menzi is on the record as a featured act, and a guest on a song like this makes sense. Success is hardly ever a one-man story, since there are people who push you, doubt you or wait for you to fall. Having a second voice in the room fits the subject.

Impumelelo sits on the Lawufaka Ilunda album, so it also helps to listen to it as part of a bigger project and not as an isolated single. A track with a title this big usually has to carry some weight on a tracklist, and it is the kind of song you play before a long day or after a small win.

Everybody has their own scoreboard, and a record that asks you to look at yours honestly is doing more than it first appears.
