IGqumelasha – Into Ethi Ayibenje Ft. Ukhoz’olumpunga & Olwethu Da Singer
Some titles make you stop and read twice. IGqumelasha teams up with ukhoz’olumpunga and Olwethu Da Singer on Into Ethi ayibenje, another cut from the Ize Leze album.
It is a long Zulu phrase, and the length is part of the appeal. It reads like a line somebody says with a shrug and a warning at the same time, the kind of thing an older person tells you about a matter you should leave alone. Every family has a version of that advice, and every young person has ignored it at least once.
Having three names on one record is worth noticing. A song like this has room for different voices to approach the same idea from different angles, and that is usually where the personality comes from. Olwethu Da Singer coming in as a guest alongside ukhoz’olumpunga suggests a record that is meant to be shared between voices instead of being carried by one person.
For Nigerian listeners who follow South African music closely, the Zulu title is no barrier. Many of us have learnt to enjoy these records for the mood first and the translation later, and Into Ethi ayibenje fits that habit well.
It is the kind of song people will argue about in the comment section, trying to agree on what the title really means. That conversation is half the fun.
