TWO OCEAN – Uhlanya Ngempela

Promise

With Uhlanya Ngempela, picks a title that sounds like something you would say with a raised eyebrow and a half smile.

In Zulu it roughly means you are truly mad, or you are really crazy. Anyone who grew up around Nigerian families knows how flexible that kind of sentence can be. It can be a scolding, it can be a compliment, it can be said to a friend who has just done something wild, or to someone in love who has stopped thinking straight. The tone of voice decides everything, and the title leaves that tone open.

The word ngempela is the part I like most. It means truly or really, and it turns a casual insult into something closer to a confession. Nobody adds that word unless they have been watching for a while and are now certain. It sounds like the moment a person finally says what everybody around them has been thinking.

The song is part of the Kuyoba Umlando album, where it sits next to titles with a much more serious spiritual mood, so this one brings a different kind of human energy to the project.

Most of us have a person like this in our lives, someone whose choices make us laugh, worry and shake our heads at the same time. Calling them mad is usually just another way of saying we care.
