TWO OCEAN – Ngisize Baba

Promise

Anybody who has run out of ideas and whispered a short prayer will understand where Ngisize Baba by is coming from.

The title translates roughly to help me, Father. There is no long introduction in those words. No decoration, no big speech. It is the sentence of a person who has reached the end of what they can handle alone and is talking straight to God. In many Nigerian homes, that is exactly how prayer sounds when things get serious, short and direct, with the polite language dropped.

The song is a track on the Kuyoba Umlando album, and the wording of the title already tells you the mood to expect. It is a plea, and a plea works differently from a celebration. It carries humility. The person asking is not pretending to have everything under control, and that honesty is what makes songs of this kind stay with people.

I find it interesting that the request is so small. It does not list the problem. It only asks. That leaves space for every listener to fill in their own situation, whether it is money, sickness, a broken home or just the weight of a bad month. Once you say Ngisize Baba in your own situation, the song becomes yours.

It is the sort of record for quiet hours, early mornings and moments when words fail.
