Marnz Malone – Who I Am

Mathew Cooker

Identity becomes harder to hide when an artist chooses to put the question directly in a title, and does exactly that with Who I Am.

There is nothing complicated about those words, but the question behind them can be. Who you are is shaped by where you come from, what you have experienced, the people around you and the choices you make after difficult moments. For an artist whose writing has often been personal, the title naturally creates room for reflection.

A review of I Wish I Could Sing describes Marnz Malone’s music as reflective and introspective, with subjects including prison, grief, relationships, poverty, ambition and street life. That context makes an identity focused record particularly relevant. People are rarely just one thing, especially when their past contains both difficult chapters and reasons to keep pushing.

Who I Am also sits at the centre of the album’s tracklist, which gives it a useful position. By this point, the project has already moved through several collaborations and different ideas. A solo track brings the attention back to Marnz himself and allows the listener to consider the person behind the other records.

There is an everyday side to the subject too. Most people eventually reach a point where they ask whether the person they have become is the person they wanted to be. That question can come after success, failure, heartbreak, prison, family pressure or simply getting older. It is not limited to artists.

The track therefore carries a personal question that many listeners can understand. Identity is not always something fixed. People change, learn and sometimes have to rebuild their idea of themselves. That makes this part of the album feel important without needing to make the message bigger than it is.
