Five Tribes – Echoes Don’t Bleed

Mathew Cooker

gives Echoes Don’t Bleed a striking title that connects memory with pain, while separating the sound of what happened from the wounds left by the experience.

An echo is something that remains after the original sound has disappeared. That makes it a fitting image for memories and old experiences. A person can leave a difficult situation and still hear parts of it in their mind through certain words, places, habits or reminders. The original event is over, but its presence can return in another form.

The title becomes more interesting when “bleed” enters the picture. Blood points to physical injury, while an echo has no body to wound. That contrast creates a clear distinction between remembering pain and experiencing the original pain again. A memory can hurt emotionally without being the same thing as the event that created it. Over time, people can learn to recognise that difference.

The song appears on the What Remains album, and the wording fits an album title that points towards what survives after difficult experiences. Some memories become quieter with time, while others remain surprisingly sharp. A familiar song, an old message or even a particular smell can suddenly bring back a moment someone thought they had moved beyond. The memory may arrive strongly, but it is still a memory. That distinction can matter when a person is learning how to live with the past without being pulled completely back into it.
