Smiselo – Akulula ungikholwe EP
Trust is the hardest thing to hand over on request, and Smiselo builds a five-track EP around that struggle with Akulula ungikholwe.
In isiZulu, the title says it is not easy to believe me. It sounds like a person who has been doubted and understands why. There is no anger in the wording, only a tired honesty, as if the speaker knows belief has to be earned slowly. Nigerians know this feeling well. A friend with a history of broken promises can say sorry a hundred times and still be doubted, and a reformed person has to prove himself one small act at a time.
What I find interesting is how the track list moves around that idea. It opens with a pointed question in Yini ungafuni, then turns to praise through a family name in Intombi yakwaMbatha. After that comes a plain longing in Ngifuna umtanami, and the project closes with a decision to give thanks in Kufanele ngibonge. So the EP travels from doubt and refusal to affection, longing and gratitude, which is a natural path for anyone trying to rebuild trust.
The guest list adds more voices. Qhawelisha and Yellowbone lezwe appear on the project, so the subject of belief is not left to one person. I will not describe production details I cannot confirm, but a short release with guests gives the sense of a conversation where both sides get to speak, the one asking to be believed and the one deciding whether to.
There is a small contrast worth noticing too. A title about doubt sits beside songs about love, family and thanks, which suggests that trust and warmth are often tangled together. By the time a friend says Akulula ungikholwe across a table, they are not begging. They are simply being truthful about where they stand.
Anyone who has had to rebuild a reputation, or has been slow to trust again, will find something familiar here. It suits reflective evenings and the long talks where two people try to start over.
