Mxhashazwa – Ubani ubaba kajesu? EP

Promise

Some project names ask a question that nobody at the table wants to answer first, and builds an entire release around one with Ubani ubaba kajesu?, a five-track EP.

In isiZulu, the title asks who the father of Jesus is. It sounds like something a curious child throws at a Sunday school teacher, or a stubborn uncle uses to start an argument after church. Faith, family and identity all sit inside one short sentence, and that is a lot of weight for a question. Nigerians know how quickly a conversation about scripture can fill a whole afternoon.

What I find interesting is how the track list moves around that opening. It starts with a refusal to forgive in Ngeke ngikuxolele, then turns to street slang in Amabhimbi, a call to gather in Umayibuthe, and a tribute to the people who provide in Yibo abangondlayo. The EP also carries its title track, so the big question is answered by songs about grudges, toughness, community and gratitude. It feels like a conversation that starts in church and wanders into the yard.

The guest list adds more voices. Thandeka Radebe, Londeka Shangase and Skhenqe appear across the project, so the questions are not left to one person. I will not describe production details I cannot confirm, but a short release with three guests gives the sense of a small circle trading opinions, the way friends do after service when nobody is in a hurry to go home.

There is a small contrast worth noticing too. A title that sounds cheeky sits beside songs about pain, pride and thanks, and that mix feels very true to life. We joke about serious things in Naija, and we get serious in the middle of jokes. By the time a friend asks what Ubani ubaba kajesu? is about, you will probably need a few minutes and a good story.

Anyone who enjoys music that mixes faith, street talk and family feeling will find something familiar here. It suits quiet Sundays, long gist sessions and evenings when the big questions come out.
