Young Stunna – IMALI Ft. Masterpiece & Dj Maphorisa

In Zulu, the word means money. It is one of the simplest words in the language and one of the most loaded. In everyday life, it can mean the salary you are waiting for, the debt you are trying to clear, or the dream of finally being comfortable. Anybody who has checked an account balance before deciding whether to go out knows how much that single word can control a mood.

What I find interesting is how the same word can sound proud or tired depending on who says it. A person who has just got paid says it with a smile. Someone who has been chasing it for months says it with a sigh. That split gives the subject plenty of room, because a song about money can be a celebration, a complaint or a quiet prayer, and a lot of people feel all three in the same week.

The names beside Young Stunna also catch the eye. DJ Maphorisa is one of the most recognised figures in South African dance music, and Masterpiece adds another name that amapiano followers will know. Having that much experience around one idea suggests a record meant to travel, and it sits comfortably in the world Young Stunna has built in South African amapiano.

Here at home, we do not need the Zulu translated for this one. Everybody understands the pressure of making ends meet and the joy of a good alert. It is a record for the end of the month, a weekend when the pocket is finally full, or the days when you are planning how to make more.

Whatever your relationship with money looks like right now, someone out there is singing about it too.
