Deejay Zebra SA – Spaza Groove
A spaza shop is the small corner store every South African township knows, and Deejay Zebra SA names a record after it, Spaza Groove, on the album The Gqom Code.
Nigerians will recognise the picture straight away, because it is basically our own provision store on the street corner. It is where you buy credit, a cold drink or a last minute item, and where the neighbourhood talks. Linking that daily scene with a groove brings the music back to ordinary life, away from the screens and code that shape the rest of the album.
That contrast is my favourite thing about the title. On a project full of technical names, this one reminds you that gqom was born in the townships and still belongs to them. The shop, the music from a small speaker and the people hanging around outside all belong to the same world.
Gqom works best when it feels connected to the street, and a name like this keeps that link alive. It gives the record a warmth that the more technical titles do not try to offer, and it stops the album from feeling too cold or too clever.
It fits an afternoon with friends, a weekend gathering or any moment when the day is slowing down and the speaker is already on. A small idea, but a very relatable one.
