Deejay Zebra SA – Base Code

Promise

Every programmer eventually returns to fundamentals, and does the same with Base Code, a record on his album The Gqom Code.

The title sounds like the starting point of the whole project. In software, base code is what everything else grows from, and in gqom the equivalent is the drum pattern that holds the track together. That makes the name feel honest. It tells you the producer is thinking about structure, not just about making noise for the club.

It also gives the album a sense of order. When a project is built around a single concept, one track needs to feel like the centre, and this title reads like it wants that job. Listeners who follow the album from beginning to end may treat it as the point where the idea becomes clearest.

Nigerian music fans know the value of a strong base. Our own scenes, from Afrobeats to street pop, rely on producers who understand rhythm at a deep level before they start adding anything fancy. Gqom works the same way, with its heavy repetition and stripped back approach.

It is a good record to play when you want to hear what a genre sounds like at its core. DJs building a set will find it useful, and casual listeners may enjoy how plain and direct the idea is.
