Deejay Zebra SA – Isisekelo
Isisekelo is the Zulu word for foundation, and Deejay Zebra SA uses it as the name of a record on his album The Gqom Code, Isisekelo.
A foundation is an interesting thing to name a dance record after. Nobody dances to a foundation, yet nothing stands without one. In gqom the drum pattern plays exactly that role, because the whole track depends on a strong base before anything else can sit on top. So the title can be read as a producer talking about his own craft, which I find smart.
It also fits the way the album is framed. The Gqom Code treats the genre as something with a structure, and this word sounds like the part where the producer goes back to basics. For listeners outside South Africa, the Zulu title adds a bit of texture too, a reminder that this music comes from a particular place and language.
Nigerian readers will understand the thought quickly. We talk a lot about foundation, whether it is in education, business, family or career, and the word carries weight in our own conversations. A track that borrows that idea gives people a small reason to think while they move.
It is a good fit for a night when the party needs to be built properly from the start, and for DJs who care about how a set begins as much as how it ends.
