Deejay Zebra SA – Javascript
Not many producers would name a dance record after a programming language, but Deejay Zebra SA did exactly that with Javascript, a cut from his album The Gqom Code.
The name is the first thing that stays with you. Javascript runs quietly behind almost every website we open, and nobody thinks about it until something stops working. There is a funny parallel with gqom itself, because the genre depends on simple repeated patterns that people feel without ever analysing them. A title like this turns that observation into a small joke for those who notice it.
Because it appears on a project built around the idea of a gqom code, the record reads like one more chapter in that story. The producer is clearly asking what happens when you treat the genre like a system with rules, functions and loops. Gqom has always been a producer’s music, made on laptops in small rooms, so the tech language is not out of place at all.
In Nigeria, where so many young people are learning to code or already working remotely in tech, the title will probably get a smile before the first beat even lands. It gives the record an easy talking point on social media and in group chats.
It works for a workout, a long drive or a night when you want something rough and rhythmic in the background. The concept is light, but it gives the whole album a memorable identity.
