Us’Hlangu Semfene – Impiyamavuma Ndaba

Promise

Long compound words have a way of announcing themselves, and Impiyamavuma Ndaba from Us’Hlangu Semfene does exactly that.

The first part begins with impi, a word known far beyond South Africa. It means war, or a body of fighting men, and it carries a lot of history with it. Ndaba is a matter, a case or a piece of news that must be dealt with. So the title already sets up a serious subject, something that cannot simply be laughed off. It is also a long word followed by a very short one, which gives it a rhythm of its own, like someone clearing their throat before making a point.

That contrast is what makes me curious. War language in Zulu is often used for situations that have nothing to do with the battlefield, such as a family dispute, a rivalry or a long fight with life itself. The title leaves that door open. You can hear it as a quarrel between two people, or as a person gathering strength to face something heavy.

On the Ubambo Lwami album, it stands in strong contrast with the softer images of a rib and of family mourning. A good album needs a record with some muscle, and this title promises one.

People who like their songs with a bit of seriousness will probably find this one easy to connect with. It speaks to anyone who has had to stand up and face a difficult matter, and everybody has.
